Ravenna in the Dante era
Ravenna, Italy, in the Dante era. Hotels near the monuments of the Dante era in Ravenna and near Dante's Tomb.
After the year 1000, Italy and Europe experienced the flourishing era of the Communes, which was an expression of a new era; Ravenna also experienced this historic changes, firstly under the rule of the local consoles and subsequently under a Podestà nominated from outside Ravenna (1181).
In 1278 Rudolph of Habsburg yielded Romagna to the Pope Nicolò lll. In the 13th century, the rule of the Commune was in the hands of the lords of the Traversari. In 1275 power was in the hands of the Da Polenta lords and Guido Novello hosted Dante Alighieri in the last years of his life (1318-1321).
Dante became so attached to the town and its history, that the people and events of Ravenna with its aura as a “Holy town” run through all of his work.
