Ravenna, Italy, has a long traditional of musical excellence, and amongst its most famous citizens is the Maestro Riccardo Muti, of Neapolitan origin but who has lived in Ravenna for years.
Maestro Muti has achieved great international acclaim in the direction of some of the leading orchestras such as, the Florentine Orchestra del Maggio Musicale, the New York Philarmonic , the Philadelphia Orchestra , the New Philharmonia Orchestra of London, Orchestre Nationale de France , Symphonieorchester des Bayerisches Rundfunks, the Wiener Philarmonieker .
Despite his busy schedule, requiring him to direct orchestras all over the world he has found time to form an orchestra in Ravenna composed of young musicians and known as the Luigi Cherubini youth orchestra ( Orchestra Giovanile Luigi Cherubini ) , which is based at the Civic theatre of Piacenza and which plays at the Ravenna Festival which is the highlight of the musical life of the town.
The Ravenna Festival, which takes place in the months of June and July, has developed thanks to the passion and commitment of Mrs. Mazzavillani Muti, who with the help of her husband, has made it a truly excellent event in terms of the musicians involved and its musical repertoire. Ravenna in the style of Salzburg Festival .
At the end of each edition, the Festival is concluded with two concerts dedicated to the “Vie dell’Amicizia” (roads of friendship).
The first of these concerts is held in Ravenna, while the second is held on the subsequent evening, in the place where the Festival theme is enacted. So that Ravenna has also acted as a point of union between East and West, bringing music as a universal message of peace between countries racked by war.
The first was in Sarajevo in 1997. While in 2006 R. Muti directed the Florentine Maggio Musicale orchestra in Meknes in Marocco.
