The Pine forests of San Vitale and of Classe, Italy, with their characteristic umbrella shaped pine, the calm water onto which the herons sweep, still retain the attraction that they held for Dante and Botticelli, Boccaccio and Byron, Oscar Wilde and D’Annunzio.
The pine forest of Classe is the ancient and magnificent pine forest that extends along the coast of the Adriatic Sea for about three thousand hectare, to the South of Ravenna. It was in ancient times far more vast, and the Romans used the timber to build and repair the ships of the great military fleet of the port of Classe.
The pine forests of Ravenna were of great economic importance also in ancient times, and they were maintained and cared for thanks to the intervention of the great Ravenna monasteries, and the Monastery of San Vitale ( Monastero ) in particular .
A visit to the Ravenna pine forests by foot, by bike or on horseback is always a great experience.
