The past has generously handed down an immense treasure to the people of Ravenna and tourists alike, confirming the ancient heritage and greatness of Ravenna: the Domus of Stone Carpets in Ravenna.
Between 1993 and 1994, the Regional Board of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage of Emilia Romagna unveiled the remains of various constructions dating from the Republican Roman period to the Byzantine period.
Amongst these, of great interest is a small palace with fourteen rooms and three courtyards.
All the rooms in the building had marble or mosaic pavements with elegant geometries and figured insertions in polychromatic weaves, hence its name “Tappeti di Pietra” (Stone Carpets).
These pavements of such immense beauty have been restored and replaced on their original site, in a specially constructed underground area with access from the church of Sant’Eufemia.
