The Ravenna territory, even if densely populated, has succeeded in maintaining wonderful natural environments, in protected zones and reserves, most of which are included in the Delta del Po park, which is home to highly interesting flora and fauna species in the valleys, in the salt marshes, the lagoons and woods.
The marshlands are unique and are what remains of the extensive swamps, which in ancient times surrounded and defended Ravenna: Punte Alberete and Piallassa Baiona, with their submerged forests and beds of rushes are natural havens for a wide variety of bird species.
The mouth of the river Bevano is today the only intact mouth of the Northern Adriatic, a landscape made up of dunes that are continually under formation and remodelling.
