Ravenna, Italy, and Romagna have always been places favoured by the cyclist. Years ago it was the sole means of transport: it later became passion and sport, and today a valid way of travelling fast in the town centre whilst respecting the environment.
Thanks to its flat territory Ravenna is a cycling paradise; so that the tourist travelling in the old town centre meets, or goes past the locals on their way to work, the housewife with her shopping or the cycling enthusiast on a trip to the sea, the pine forests or the hinterland.
Bikes, which can also be hired, are the best and newest way of visiting Ravenna; permitting easy access to the town centre, from the Basilica of San Vitale to all the leading monuments right up to the Basilica of S. Apollinare Nuovo ans Sant'Apollinare in Classe which can be reached on a cycle track, following the ancient Roman road to the ancient Port of Classe.
Bikes can also be used to reach the Romanesque parish churches dating back to the IX-X centuries: as well as the important relics of the Papal era, following the Byzantine decadence and Longobard occupation, the relics being dotted around the Ravenna countryside. These churches are not greatly frequented by visiting tourists, so that one can appreciate their silence.
Then there is the sea: which is accessible on a protected cycle track; whilst the pine forests provide natural routes as well as the marshlands of the Delta del Po park, where bird watching is also possible.
The mountain bike being the ideal way of travelling on the dirt and sand roads of the pine forests of S.Vitale, and Classe, amongst the ancient dunes between the Lido di Dante and the mouth of the Bevano; a map of all these routes is available from the Information centre near the Hotel Centrale Byron and Hotel Bisanzio.
The road bike is the best bet for cycling enthusiasts for bike trips from the centre of the town to the surrounding hills: these routes extend for about total eighty kilometres go and back, and are all over flat and quiet provincial roads; the cyclists being provided with the opportunity of discovering the well cultivated countryside, with certain remains of the Roman Centurian times remaining, up to the Bertinoro tract, which is hard going but which can be tackled at the right pace by all without too much strain.
We then come to Bertinoro, the “balcony” of Romagna, which during the finest days offers a truly breathtaking view.
The delightful Medieval hamlet of Bertinoro invites the cyclist to enjoy a good meal before his trip back to Ravenna.
Hotel Centrale Byron and Hotel Bisanzio form the starting point of these itineraries.
Thanks to their position in the old town centre, ( the ancient castrum romano ), the cyclist tourist can either alone or in groups, admire all this before proceeding on to other art towns such as Ferrara, Venice and Florence.
