Ravenna suffered repeated bombing during the first World War and was awarded the War Cross.
During the Fascist regime Ravenna continued to demonstrate its Democratic, progressive and Libertine tendencies and made a great contribution to both the Resistance and the anti-Fascist Liberation movement, for which it was bestowed the Gold Medal of Military Valour.
In the national referendum dated 2nd June 1948, Ravenna citizens turned in the largest percentage of votes (91,18%), in favour of the Republic.
